VANCOUVER MEN'S FIELD HOCKEY LEAGUE

CODE OF CONDUCT AGREEMENT

WHEREAS:

A. Playing field hockey in the Vancouver Field Hockey League is a privilege, not a right;
B. Serious injuries can occur if players do not exercise due care and attention;
C. The game cannot be played without umpires;

THEREFORE I AGREE AS FOLLOWS:

1. If in Premier Division, I will not play unless my team has a non-playing coach present and a team captain designated and wearing a captain's arm band.

2. Before the start of each game I will line up with my team at the centre line and shake hands with members of the opposing team.

3. I will not speak to or say anything about an umpire, unless:

(a) I am asked to do so by the umpire; or
(b) I am my team's designated captain, I am wearing a captain's arm band, all the other members of my team are at least 5 meters away, and the umpire has given me permission to speak.

4. If I am invited or given permission to speak to an umpire, I will do so quietly and respectfully.

5. Before, during and after a game I will not threaten, abuse or harass anyone, including other players, coaches, umpires or spectators, whether physically or verbally, and I will not trash talk.

6. I accept that there is no such thing as a tackle from the "wrong side", and that opposing players may attempt to tackle me safely from any angle.

7. I will never raise my stick over the head of another player (FIH rule 9.2).

8. I will never hit the ball or swing or raise my stick in a manner that might intimidate or injure another player, or force another player to take evasive action, and accept that I may be penalized for doing so.

9. I accept that I will be penalized if I wield my stick in a dangerous manner, even if accidentally so, as player safety is of paramount importance and it is my responsibility to use every effort to avoid injuring other players.

10. If I do cause an injury I will identify myself to the umpire, and understand that if I fail to do so then the game may be forfeit and my team may be barred from further participation in the Vancouver League.

11. I will always wear a mouth guard and shin pads, and understand that I may not be covered by insurance if I fail to do so.
